Years 3/4 Term 4 2011 Introductory Letter

October 10, 2011

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I offer my respectful obeisances.  All glories to Srila Prabupada.

Hare Krishna and welcome to Term 4.

Term 4 starts out with a bang as our class and the grade 5/6 class will be going to Midginbil Hill for three days of exciting camping activities.  We are looking forward to a fun experience at camp.

As usual, there will be plenty of great learning experiences in the classroom as we head towards the end of the school year.  Everyone has improved so much and can take pride in their abilities.  Our focus for the term is Govardhana Puja and the term value is Austerity.

As in the previous terms, Mother Yasoda will be teaching Art and Physical Education. Mother Mandakini will be teaching Drama and Mother Vilasa will continue teaching Ayurveda.  We thank them for the efforts and wonderful service.

We kindly remind parents that students need to supply their own pencils and erasers for class.  Our class supply is running low.  Also, I ask that parents make sure that their child has a water bottle to keep at school.  Moving into the summer months, it will become essential for students to have drinks readily available in the classroom.

It is requested that parents do a quick check for head lice before sending students to school.

If there are any concerns please feel free to contact me at any point during the term by email or telephone here at the Gurukula.

Years K/2 Term 4 2011 Introductory Letter

10 October 2011

Dear Parents,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All Glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Welcome to Term 4, 2011! I hope to see all those smiley faces daily. We have plenty of work to do. WE start TODAY! Please find below some housekeeping matters as well as an overview of the unit. This is what’s planned, but please bear in mind that this is subject to changes if need be, due to circumstances.

Household matters:

·         For those who did not give me a homework folder, please send me one so I can send home readers. THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT!

·         Please , your child is supposed to bring his/her own pencils. Note that HB and 2B pencils are recommended. Others make too much mess in their book.

·         No lollies, chewing gum, bubble gum, chocolates. Please limit the chips and send enough fruits and main lunch.

·         A reminder that our school is a 5 -day school. It is our duty to report any inconsistency to the relevant authorities.

·         Just letting you know that I do keep lost property if found!

Overview of integrated unit:

Vaisnava Studies  will be infiltrated throughout all the KLAs. Students will learn about how Lord Krsna is the ultimate provider of all our needs provided that we surrender to Him. The story of Govardhana puja will be used to show how Krsna instructed his devotees not to worship the demigods but only Him, for from Him emanates all and all our needs will be met. They will learn that Harinam is the way to send rain for growing our food. They will also study why we should be vegetarian and what sort of food needs to be offered to Krsna. Along with that, they will revise the food offering mantras, and learn how to thank the lord for providing our daily needs by chanting the Sarira song. And ultimately all this is for helping us to be ‘self controlled’

PDHPE: In Personal Development they will focus on Austerity and Self control. In Health students will learn about healthy food and healthy choices

Those who are ready will play simple melodies and sing.

Years 5/6 Term 4 2011 Introductory Letter

10 October 2011

Dear Parents and Carers of Year 5/6 Students,

Hare Krsna and welcome to Term 4,

Here are our topics for this term;

  • Vaisnava Studies: Self-Control (pillar of religion) and the last topic for our preliminary Bhakti Sastri studies is the Sri Isopanisad.
  • Math: Mass, Time, 2D and 3D Space and Geometry.
  • HSIE: Two topics - Australian Currency and World Religions (Islam).
  • Science: Body Science (organs and their functions, the cell). We also look at modern scientific theories such as Big Bang, Evolution, the Fossil Record.
  • English: Grammar, Reading Comprehension, Text Type (Writing Procedures and Explanations), Talking and Listening (Life Skills).
  • Art, Ayurveda and Drama

We also continue to watch Behind The News (BTN), a half hour children's news program from the ABC, every Wednesday. This is a great program that always sparks discussion about current events.

Changes: The timetable has altered for our class this term. We will not be sending homework, or having a spelling test at the end of the week (hooray!) However, we will be having double math sessions on Monday to Wednesday only (2 days math free!), and final exams for spelling, math, etc. I have arranged for more in-school work, as well as more free time during the week. That way, when the students go home, they can spend more time with the family and friends. Next year will be different, as they will be undertaking high school work and I expect there will be a little homework.

If anyone wants to contribute time, ideas, resources and so on, please contact myself or Vinod on 6672 3788. If you would like to see programming detail, you can also arrange to meet me sometime suitable.

Hope you have a great term. Looking forward to camp!

Gurukula Students Drawings at Tweed River Art Gallery

This year the students of Bhaktivedanta Swami Gurukula (Hare Krishna School) were invited to participate in a popular children's art competition organised and sponsored by Tweed River Art Gallery, the Friends of the Gallery and Tyalgum Public School. The competition challenges thousands of Tweed's primary school students to imagine themselves in another time or place. Students inspired by the theme 'Different Places, Different Faces' use their art making skills to transform themselves into different characters from other realms.

We are happy to announce that six of our students drawings will be included within a framed display of 40 of the most outstanding Prize entries and the portraits drawn by Madhavi (Year 6) and Madhuri (Year K) will be given some of the top Prizes. The beautiful drawing by Madhavi featuring Lord Jagannatha's smiling face and a dancer is decorating the official invitation card for the event at the gallery.

The opening celebrations of the event will be held from 10:30am till 12:30pm on Sunday, 25th of September at Tweed River Art Gallery.
